I was told, “Aly, stop playing with your food” since I was seven.
Hey, I’m Aly. I created this blog to reach as many single parent families that love food as much as I do. I’ve been a single mother since I was sixteen. I know the struggles of making ends meet is hard. There are so many wonderful resources out there for self-empowerment. I hope that this blog can be one of those resources.
I'm a senior communications major at University of Louisville, but I started out the first two years of my degree as a pre-dental student. I was able to get involved in some amazing volunteer opportunities in that field, like assisting dental students in tooth extractions for marginalized people and vets in a little town in TN through the Remote Area Medical Clinic. I love biology, research, and data, but I changed my major when I decided to fuel my real passion and connection with food.
I craved time to do this. Write. Cook. Photograph. Smile.
My grandpa raised me in the suburbs of Southern Indiana and in his generation the women did all of the cooking. It was just the two of us, and needless to say, we had many bland meals of steak, potatoes, and corn seasoned with only salt and butter (sorry grandpa). It was here that my interest in and longing for delicious food began.
In my late teens my grandpa had a stroke and was diagnosed with type II diabetes. Another stroke followed a few years later. It broke my heart open and I began getting more serious about cooking. This is how I want to help people—through sharing recipes that are both healthy and affordable. Access to good food is a major issue in the U.S. As a Family Scholar House resident, I want to give back to my community and my grandpa the best way that I know how.
After my pregnancy, I developed some weird food allergies (orange—but not citrus, pine—hello fake Christmas tree, and shiitake mushrooms) and lactose-intolerance. I’ve since cut dairy out of my diet (with special exceptions for the rare indulgence) and while I’m not vegan, most of the food I eat is largely plant-based.
